Twenty Years Of Marriage. Romance. Testing Out Waterless Shampoo

About forty years ago, I began discovering the challenges of hygiene and physical accessibility. Times

like when I was recovering from a broken leg or spine surgeries, staying at my parents home (unable to freely access a bath tub or shower), or even if I went away where access to easy bathing methods were a challenge. I even tried getting hair permanents (curling hair with rollers and a chemical solution wreaking of ammonia) that dries out your hair, even burning some off. Resulting in hopeful curls or waves, trying to delay that oily greasy hair thing.

If you've ever been recovering from surgery, illness or live with a physical challenge like I have since childhood, then you know what I am talking about. In fact when you are in the hospital, you may also have experienced sponge or bed baths. What's that you ask? It means a nurse sets a bowl of warm water
by your bedside with a washcloth (not usually a  sponge), bar of soap and towel in hand. I remember it happening daily. Depending how long I was to be laid up for, my hair was never washed in bed, so no matter how clean I may have felt after, the greasy hair feeling increased daily. Back then I never heard of dry or waterless shampoos (which is what this video is about). You know how icky your head and body can feel when you can bath. Hard to believe that in the middle ages bathing was apparently annually if it all!

People don't talk about this much so I want to share ideas, reviews and offer what I can to help anyone with mobility issues that want to know ways of feeling clean even when you can't access the shower. Today I want to share a video Craig and I made last year, that I totally forgot about, testing out something called waterless shampoo. Watch to see if it was successful or not.

Craig's Newest Love: Come And Find Out Why

Yes Craig has a new love. Of course he always says his only loves are me And our Lord Jesus Christ. However, In recent weeks, Something entered his life That is changed him in ways I never imagined. Jealousy knocks on my door, But I refuse to let it in, especially because I can completely understand why. Over the course of my life, My dear mom has given me two of these devices, understandably, because she thought they would help my life. Unfortunately in my situation, you need two well functioning hands to make one work. My life wasn't complete, But I got bye :o)

If any of you out there have osteoarthritis Or any other kind of hand pain, You too will completely understand why my husband has a new love. It has been difficult seeing how much pain he is in, just completing simple tasks like opening jars or cans. Then one day our last manual can opener croaked again. Trying to figure out what to do, I became like my mom - That happens more often than you think- Thanks Mom! What could help my husband, even just a tiny bit? One of those electric can openers that mom used to try to give me!
On to Amazon I went. Never owning one before,  I asked Craig his opinion. Turns out he had one before, back when he was a bachelor. So it was time For him to have one again.

Below Is a fun And mildly informative video, About why An electric can opener may make your life easier. Hope you enjoy.

NEWS FLASH! My Man In Motion...Craig's Wheels, Old...Now New!!

Finally, after adjusting from a desktop computer, testing an IPad, and compromising with my first ever lap top... I have completed the long awaited, much anticipated "Craig Gets His New Wheelchair!" expose :o)
Because he has had it for a couple of months, it isn't new anymore, but hey, better late than never. It made me happy to know that my dear husband has gone from a very old (in chair years), literally falling apart wheelchair to a brand new, safe set of wheels! Never before have I seen, nor have any of my old manual chairs been used to the point that pieces can be pulled off! Take a look in the video below to see what I am talking about.
Are You Looking for a new Wheelchair?
When it comes to Craig and I, we both  recommend the QUICKIE brand. So we are biased. We do recommend researching brands. These days online, it is easy to check out actual chairs and the companies and all the models available as well as, having access to the feelings, thoughts and reviews of actual wheelchair users. Who better to ask than actual users! As a wheelchair user most of my fifty years of life, it always bothered me when mobility equipment and such is designed by non-users.

HOW A HELMET SAVED MORE THAN JUST MY LIFE

Here are some great You TubeChannels that have been produced by fellow wheel chair users. It is wonderful that there are so many folks sharing their wisdom and life experience in hope that, just as Walking, Way Overrated's hope, is to encourage and assist others who are living with or know loved ones living with physical challenges.
Most of the links are created by persons living with spinal cord injuries. Unlike us, my disorder was acquired before birth and Craig's too, but he did,'t face using a wheelchair until about thirty years later. Either way, the information is beneficial whether you are facing a sudden life altering challenge or are use to things the way they are. We never know what we may learn from others! So thank you to all these great folks sharing their wisdom!

Be encouraged, learn and grow!

Meet Rich from Handi Help!
The other day as I was browsing, I discovered this inspiring man named Rich. He is 6 foot 5 inches and severed his spinal cord about 17 years ago. He is all about creating adaptions in order to enable he and others like us, to be able to be as independent as posible, enjoying all the activities prior to the onse
t of a disability. He has quite the ingenious mind. I am fifty, was born with my disability and never considered some of Rich's most helpful solutions!
Share this with anyone you know who may benefit from some pretty cool problem solving - all to not miss out on "normal" life!
I highly suggest checking out Rich's kayaking ang Sled dog racing fun too!

JOY STICK TROUBLES? HERE'S A COOL SOLUTION...SUGRU

I love working with Polymer Clay and watching tutorials about using it. On one of my favourite channels, "Polymer Clay Tutor" I learned about a really cool new product/invention called Sugru. What does Polymer clay have to do with Walking Way Overrated you ask? Well, this is my blog and it is one of my favourite things to create with. Aside from that, I discovered today when I went to purchase some of this amazing putty like stuff that the product helped this beautiful young lady use her joystick on her power chair.
Joy Stick?
A joy stick is not just a gaming device, it is what we use to control and drive our power wheelchairs. And joy sticks can just fall off. Years ago mine fell off far from home, on a street. I am not able to reach the ground so I left assuming it would be long lost. My husband surprised me days later, when he went and retrieved it, it wasn't lost. To be romantic :o), he put it on a special wire to make it look like some kind of a special ring. He knew how much it meant to me to get it back, because I had assumed that I would never see it again! It has been falling off again! Lo and behold, I saw this video today as I was on the Sugru website buying their product to check it out. What were the odds I would see a video about how Sugru was used to help someone like me! Take a look!

What Is Sugru and Other Sugru Uses

Here is the link to the SUgru Website as well as the original video from the polymer clay tutor, where I learned about this cool fix it putty!

Bedpans, And Toilets, And Catheters Oh My!

We All Gotta Do It!
From the moment we are born, it isn't a secret that we are always in need of waste elimination. From poopy diapers, to potty training trials, training pants, bed wetting, and graduation day, being able to control it all as needed.

The Bottom Of the Matter!
Until recently, I never considered talking about the physical challenges bowel/bladder issues that can arise when you have a physical disability. After all,  poop talk isn't exactly a socially acceptable topic for casual discussion. But you know what?  It is a hard core reality. And it makes life a heck of a lot easier, when you can ask questions and seek advice on any topic that is crucial to life. After all, if we don't eliminate waste products, we can get pretty ill and even die. So it is serious enough to not be be embarrassed by. Jonathan Merchant isn't embarrassed about it all. In fact, it is why I am writing this post, to share his very personal and "family friendly" video, dealing with his particular disability (spinal cord injury), and his bowel care routine. Craig and I, stumbled upon his video a while ago, and thought how brave he was to share such a personal aspect of life. After watching him, it was impossible to feel embarrassed about bathroom "stuff," ever again. As you will see in Jonathan's video, he is discussing how you can be independent regarding bowel care. We don't all have the same physical abilities, so his method is appropriate for others with the same type of mobility and strength. Look how amazingly flexible he is!
You will notice that he has something attached to his right leg. He doesn't talk about it, but it is called a "leg bag." That is a bag that collects urine which runs through tubing. For males, the tubing is attached to a condom catheter. Females who use this method, use indwelling catheters. I can go into more detail on all that another time.
Watch Jonathan's video if you want and then we will talk some more.

We always learned to call suppositories, the "bullet" method! Depending on muscle tone, strength, whether we have spinal cord damage, or can not feel anything, or lack muscle control, or whatever the case may be, our bowel eliminating methods can vary.  Jonathan's routine is one method that is used routinely, when persons are not able to push out waste material or for those of us who just use suppositories as needed.  Such as, when having very hard stool issues or constipation. Don't' get me started on how much that can hurt! Some need to use suppositories regularly and some require then as needed.

If you have had your own experiences that may help someone in your position. Please leave questions and comments below. I hope to delve into more detail on this very personal issue soon.
