Husband Tapes My Mouth Shut! Does It Work? campout vlog part 1 and 2

It's another night Camping Indoors. Which means I sleep in my wheelchair and Craig sleeps on the raised futon. I saw somewhere that taping your mouth shut, helps you sleep better especially if you have sleep apnea or snore. Before I Go to Sleep I made a request to my husband. Nothing surprises him!. I apologize For the severe grogginess , because, I was just about to fall asleep as we recorded part 2 my husband had to turn off the phone camera. Just another night in the life of us!

Be Encouraged: Owning Your Weakness And Forgiveness - Joni Eareckson Tada Message Share

This posting was just shared on our Sure Hope Gazette blog. Since these videos and this dear godly woman, my earthly hero, speaks from experience and pertains to our lives, it makes sense to share her message on this blog as well. We can only face each day because of our Saviour, our heart is that anyone who want to know about the Sure Hope we can all have, will get a lot out Joni's words.

And please don't think this message is only beneficial for persons living with physical disabilities. Not at all, this message is great for all of us. You may think, oh that's Joni, the lady who broke her neck in 1967 when she was 17. She's the lady who inspires people living with disabilities. That's great for them, but, I don't need to listen - it's not for me because I don't have a disability.
Well, we would ask you if you do think like that, please think again. Joni's message is always a powerful one to all people. Whatever you may struggle with or however you may feel, god blesses this amazing woman with a heart that shares the love of Christ. She encourages me, and millions of others. And we want to share more messages from her as we receive them to help inspire and motivate, spur on anyone who's heart longs for meaning, Sure Hope and New Life. Including seeing that quality of life is not about whether or not your body works, you are healthy or rich, successful as the world sees successful, come and hear what real Sure Hope is all about, from a woman who knows what of what she speaks.

The cool thing as often happens in my life, is how God has an amazing way of encouraging us just at the right moment, right when we need it. He knows what we need, when we need it. Today, He knew I needed to hear from my earthly hero who speaks about my Heavenly Hero, Jesus Christ. How our weaknesses really are our strengths because of Him. close to Him.  He cares about all aspects of our lives.

The Most Expensive Medical Treatment Ever! The First Ever Treatment For Spinal Muscular Atrophy!

Today, I learned about a new first ever, actual treatment for people with Spinal Muscular Atrophy called Spinraza. Having no clue about this incredible news, I never dreamed I would live to see the day that there would be any helpful treatments. Never been concerned about being cured or helped my self, but
Me, Anita 1967.
definitely prayed for help for friends and all the young ones battling SMA. There are three types, Type 1, 2, and 3 as well as adult onset. I, Anita, have type three and am now fifty-one. My arms can no longer leave my side, but I am blessed with still being able to  use my right hand well, swallow food and beverages, as well as breathe on my own. My life is a gift from God enhanced by a wonderful husband, friends and family - not to mention lovely Personal Care Attendants who are my "arms and legs," to assist me with all aspects of daily living.

As I research this new treatment, trying to answer a question a researcher asked me on the phone today: Would I be interested in trying the treatment if offered? I "met some inspiring folks of all ages on YouTube, fellow SMA'ers I like to say. I want to you guys to meet them too....

As soon as I know more, I will be posting more about this new treatment that was approved in the USA by the FDA in December 2016 and maybe soon in Canada (my homeland.)

Now meet just a few of the many wonderful people whom I am honoured to call fellow SMA'ers, my peers.

MEET RICH! Creating Your Own Adaptive Devices - Living Like I Always Did

Meet Rich from Handi Help!
The other day as I was browsing, I discovered this inspiring man named Rich. He is 6 foot 5 inches and severed his spinal cord about 17 years ago. He is all about creating adaptions in order to enable he and others like us, to be able to be as independent as posible, enjoying all the activities prior to the onse
t of a disability. He has quite the ingenious mind. I am fifty, was born with my disability and never considered some of Rich's most helpful solutions!
Share this with anyone you know who may benefit from some pretty cool problem solving - all to not miss out on "normal" life!
I highly suggest checking out Rich's kayaking ang Sled dog racing fun too!
Below are just a few of his many great videos as well.
Be encouraged.

It's The Worst Thing In The World?!...

The Worst Thing In The World...
When I first started out as a young woman, about the age of fourteen, I knew that because of my Neuromuscular Disorder, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, that I would never be able to have children. It was at this time, that a very inappropriate incident happened while I was an inpatient,on the paediatric floor of our local hospital. Thank the Lord, He spared me from what could have resulted in a life altering decision, that I would have made out of sheer ignorance.

It sounds unbelievable but it happened, while I was admitted for back related surgery. I don't want to share all the sordid details, because they have no purpose. But, the story in general is part of a life changing lesson....  I came home believing I might be pregnant! Sharing my fears and the details  with my closest cousin/friend. We kept it to ourselves during Christmas break. I didn't know what to do, except talk with her thankfully.  It was far too scary to tell my parents. Filled with shame and the fear of the worst rejection, my mouth stayed shut. By the end of my two week Christmas vacation, my nerves let go and began shivering and quaking my insides. It was during their  New Year's eve house party, as I was tucked up in bed, that I summoned my mom in tears.  I had to say something. After all, I might be pregnant (or so I feared). As the tears rolled down my cheeks, she entered my bedroom and asked what was wrong....the words didn't come. All I could say over and over was, "It's the worst thing the world, it is the worst thing in the world..." Oddly enough, my Mom guessed immediately, what I was trying to say. The bottom line was, she said I would have to have an abortion if I was pregnant. I just agreed, it was all I knew to do. She didn't yell or anything like that, it was all so matter of fact. She said I had to tell my Dad! Terrified of making him hate me, I laid there shivering some more. He entered my room and she exited. And again, all I could say between sobs, was..."it's the worst thing in the world.... over and over" He didn't say it out loud, but it was clear to me that he also knew what I was talking about. Something tells me, they had discussed this before. He gently affirmed what my Mom said about what I would have to do, if I was with child. He left the room and both went back to their party. I must make sure that it is clear, that my parents do NOT approve of abortion at all. Back then, the belief was that pregnancy could kill me.
Phew!
Well, after Christmas break, I was brought back to my second home. It was a residential institution for children with disabilities where we could get physic and occupational therapy. And in my case, I could attend an accessible school. For some reasons I shared what happened with one of the Registered nurses at the time. Not because I was scared, but because back then, I was a desperate young lady, wanting to be loved and to love. For some reason, sharing something like this (even though the boy should have been arrested), with others, in my twisted mind was my way of letting people know that someone "loved" me.
Well, this boy did not love me one bit. It was wrong and should not have happened.
Another person was eavesdropping and called in my Mom, recommending that I be put on the birth control pill. My mom later told me that she said, "no, I think Anita, has learned her lesson." Dear Mom....thank you for your vote of confidence.
Thankfully, I wasn't pregnant and what I thought happened, didn't. However, my neediness, still meant I was going to make bad choices. It is clear to me, that that summer when I was fifteen, I got my first full time summer job as a Recreational Assistant at the Nipigon Hospital. One day while I
was in the huge library there, lying on the huge board room style table was a single book. Maybe it was beside there, not so sure...all I know is it was the only book I remember seeing. Can't remember the title, but it was loaded with photographs and testimonies all about what abortion was. You see, up until that moment, even though I had agreed, I never knew what it meant to have an abortion. I just knew it meant I wouldn't be pregnant anymore. Not for one second, did I consider, how that pregnancy would end. Nor did I even consider that it would actually be murder....a choice, I would not have been able to undo. If you don't really know what happens in an abortion, I beg you please research the subject. If I didn't find out, the Lord only knows what would have happened to me. Once I knew it was wrong, I wouldn't of had one, even if it wold have killed me to be pregnant.
God Opens My Eyes
I wasn't following the Lord at this point in my life, but I definitely now believe, He orchestrated that event. So I could work there (thanks to my Mom's help), and just "stumble" upon this powerful book! Needless to say, my fear of ever getting pregnant, kept me from making anymore wrong decisions that might result in pregnancy. In no way, did I ever want to risk that happening. So much so, I didn't even trust the birth control pill. That one or two percent chance, for me, was still too high.
Unfortunately, I did make a huge, foolish decision a year or so later to have a tubal ligation. It was for all the wrong reasons and sadly, I wish I would have learned much sooner what real love was. But, all things happen for a reason and I know nothing is in vain.
Here I am, alive and able to share what God did for me and does ever single moment.
Abortion Survivor?!
This woman I want to share below, also has an even more incredible story to share...Did you know there are those who have survived an abortion attempt on their lives? Gianna Jessen, is one of the most  amazing ladies I have ever discovered on the internet. Until "meeting" Gianna, I never knew that there were adults in our world who actually survived a murder attempt on their life, in their mom's womb. Gianna's Mom went to an abortion clinic. The Doctor did the horrifying act of  believing he was killing Gianna. Her wee teeny body was left on a shelf or some cold place like that and then miracles of miracles happened...God caused a nurse to intercept this tiny baby's life, struggling to survive. It has been a few years or more since we first watched her testimony, so I don't have all the exact details. But I remember the nurse brought her to a hospital to get medical care and Gianna survived! It was a true act of God as she blesses the lives of others, through being adopted and sharing her story and her passion for supporting the protection of ALL human life.
Worth Watching....
Meet Gianna

What If?
If you have had an abortion, please know that if you confess your sins and repent, turning toward Jeus Christ, we all can find forgiveness. I could never be good enough. Jesus loves you. Without Him, I would not be here.

WAY COOL VIRAL VIDEOS INVOLVING PERSONS USING WHEELCHAIRS!

Craig and I have been using wheels for legs for decades now and admittedly, we have had many an adventure! Okay, he makes doing laundry look fun! Well, I drew him looking like he has fun!
The drawing I did, is supposed to be my husband Craig, having a laundry adventure!
Recently a dear friend sent us this video from a website called VIRAL VIDEOS and it was a really cool invention that enables a manual wheelchair user pull up into this three wheeled motorized system that converts your chair basically into a three wheel motorcycle! Wanting to share this great, adventurous looking mobility device, I Googled the subject and discovered a whole list of really neat viral videos featuring our fellow users of wheelchairs! Some pretty cool adventures as well as meaningful and inspirational ones!
- There is a dude who created a way to plow snow using his wheelchair, click here to see that one.
- A goat that needs an assistive device! Click here to see that.
- A lady who "Freestyles" in her chair. Reminds me of my nephew when he skateboarded as a young one. Click here to see.
- And a person who is a paraplegic who goes bungee jumping in their chair! Click here
-A dog pushes a person who uses a wheelchair through flood waters! click.

SURPRISE! NOT JUST TACKS CAUSE LEAKS...

If you use wheels for legs like we do, then you know all about the potential for flat tires. It's why I opt for "no-flats." After one too many flat tires on my power chair, it seemed like the best solution. However, they only work if you can handle feeling every single bump and crack. Craig's pain is amplified by bumps and cracks, so pneumatic (air) wheels work best for him. For the last year however, he has had one rear tire that springs a leak far too often. Even more mysterious, the leak is

always near the same spot on the tube.

Surprise!
This video is about looking for the reason behind the annoying leak. Lo and behold, he discovered something we never would have known about if he didn't look for a cause. It wasn't a tack, a pin, piece of glass or a nail...watch and see. We figured we should share the discovery, incase it happens to you or someone you know. Then you won't have to go through the repeated frustration we did. Even better we are trying a solution to stop it from happening again.

You may be surprised at what caused his leak.

Take a look.
If you have had this experience, let us know. If you have any questions about wheelchair maintenance, we'd love to hear from you. Between Craig and I, we have over 50 years experience of using power and manual wheelchairs. So we know a little bit that can help.

Mike King - Running the Race | Joni and Friends

Yay, Joni and Friends have produced some more inspirational videos. There are other videos they have produced that are on this blog,  but since Joni went through her bought with cancer, there hadn't been any new ones (Understandably so).  That reminds me... more about that in another post.

Meet Mike King!
"Mike King became paraplegic from a motorcycling accident, as an athletic young man. He overcame his depression with a goal to cross America on his wheelchair. After training, he accomplished his goal by wheeling from Fairbanks Alaska, down the Alaska Highway and across the Continental U.S. to Washington D.C. He then found purpose through becoming a paralympian and champion in wheelchair athletics, coaching and becoming a disability ministry leader." taken from Joni And Friends Website

Pasta Making, My Way...

Pasta Dreams
As far back as I can remember, I have been a lover of pasta. No Italian heritage required to be love pasta. My main source, the packaged kind. Even when my arms were stronger I never thought I could make fresh home made pasta. Thanks to the internet and the countless number of tutorials on ever subject under the sun, the inspiration to try making it hit me hard. At first I tried making gnocchi, something else I never thought possible. Gnocchi may be Italian, but it isn't exactly pasta. I believe it is referred to as a dumpling. Usually made with potatoes, flour and egg, it requires something I am not able to do, knead. Turns out it doesn't require as much kneading as I thought. Since I can't knead the traditional way, it was really exciting for me to figure out how to cause the gnocchi dough to be useable, even eatable. It took a couple of tries to master the texture and method, but it happened. Gnocchi is no longer something I can only buy in the grocery store or at Italfest!

As I continued watching pasta tutorials, it was time to go all out and make pasta. With my semolina in hand, I settles on one of a bazillion recipes for pasta. There are recipes with a heap of eggs, some with a couple, some with just water and/or oil…some with one hundred percent semolina, some fifty fifty, mixed with all purpose flour, some with just all purpose flour…some have oil, some do not. Needless to say, finding one recipe wasn't easy. Remember pin the tail on the donkey? Well, spin yourself around with a blind fold and point, where ever your finger points, follow that recipe. Okay, didn't quite do it that way, but I chose one recipe and started my pasta making adventure. It took a total of about five hours to make enough for one meal for Craig and I, but it worked! Since my hands and arms don't have much strength, as you will see in the video below, my first attempt was making the hand formed pasta called "Little Ears" in English. Was it perfect? No, it was edible. It was dense and chewy, but it was something. Just knowing that it was possible to make pasta by modifying the process so I could manage it, was incredibly satisfying. Then my next attempts involved a rolling pin and my husbands arms. That worked too. Better still, I was able to use the rolling pin, bit by bit, all by myself! Thank You God. How rewarding.

Bedpans, And Toilets, And Catheters Oh My!

We All Gotta Do It!
From the moment we are born, it isn't a secret that we are always in need of waste elimination. From poopy diapers, to potty training trials, training pants, bed wetting, and graduation day, being able to control it all as needed.

The Bottom Of the Matter!
Until recently, I never considered talking about the physical challenges bowel/bladder issues that can arise when you have a physical disability. After all,  poop talk isn't exactly a socially acceptable topic for casual discussion. But you know what?  It is a hard core reality. And it makes life a heck of a lot easier, when you can ask questions and seek advice on any topic that is crucial to life. After all, if we don't eliminate waste products, we can get pretty ill and even die. So it is serious enough to not be be embarrassed by. Jonathan Merchant isn't embarrassed about it all. In fact, it is why I am writing this post, to share his very personal and "family friendly" video, dealing with his particular disability (spinal cord injury), and his bowel care routine. Craig and I, stumbled upon his video a while ago, and thought how brave he was to share such a personal aspect of life. After watching him, it was impossible to feel embarrassed about bathroom "stuff," ever again. As you will see in Jonathan's video, he is discussing how you can be independent regarding bowel care. We don't all have the same physical abilities, so his method is appropriate for others with the same type of mobility and strength. Look how amazingly flexible he is!
You will notice that he has something attached to his right leg. He doesn't talk about it, but it is called a "leg bag." That is a bag that collects urine which runs through tubing. For males, the tubing is attached to a condom catheter. Females who use this method, use indwelling catheters. I can go into more detail on all that another time.
Watch Jonathan's video if you want and then we will talk some more.

We always learned to call suppositories, the "bullet" method! Depending on muscle tone, strength, whether we have spinal cord damage, or can not feel anything, or lack muscle control, or whatever the case may be, our bowel eliminating methods can vary.  Jonathan's routine is one method that is used routinely, when persons are not able to push out waste material or for those of us who just use suppositories as needed.  Such as, when having very hard stool issues or constipation. Don't' get me started on how much that can hurt! Some need to use suppositories regularly and some require then as needed.

If you have had your own experiences that may help someone in your position. Please leave questions and comments below. I hope to delve into more detail on this very personal issue soon.

Doing Laundry Sitting Down!

When you sit down, doing laundry can be difficult using a top loading washer. Here is how we do it using the perfect adaptive aid, a front loading washing machine.

Fun Was Had By All....

A Night Of Surprises!
Justin Hines, we introduced him in the last post, encouraging our fellow town folk to attend his concert. Well, we made it and wow, what a blessing that evening was.
Not only is he an incredibly talented Canadian singer, he is, as we suspected, a deep, sincere,  and meaningful person! You can tell that when you watch him sing and listen to his lyrics. And well, when you actually meet him! Surprise!  On our way to the venue, my husband Craig, my Dad and myself, were about to walk through the parking lot and spotted the "Vehicle of Change" RV and who was coming out of it? Justin and his beautiful wife, Savannah. (Hope I have her name spelled correctly)
Guess who my Dad, husband and I got to meet prior to the concert?
That was one of a few surprises that night. The first one was, we didn't know until we bought tickets and read them, that Justin was touring with a duo who call themselves "Ash and Bloom." Unaware, we googled them and were glad to learn that we'd enjoy them as well. Turned out A & B were sincere, deep and meaningful also! Oh and our first thoughts, "they remind us of Simon and Garfunkel!"
Capturing A Great Evening
Wanting to capture this once in a life time event (for us) and to make a tribute to Justin and now, Ash and Bloom, I came with my handy dandy, compact digital camera...mission accomplished. Check out the edited version  here.
Side Bar: Adaptive Video and Photography Pointers
I made my usual amateur video. I apologize for the wobbles and shakes. When I make videos my arms aren't able to move beyond my chest level, which means, I point and shoot and hope it works! Been doing it this way ever since my arms stopped cooperating. Hey, it's all about adapting as you go. The invention of the compact digital camera has definitely been a blessing. It means less weight to hold and that I can take pictures without being able to hoist the camera up to my eye. TO me, a camera can feel like it weighs a pound, so that's definitely a plus.
After doing it so much, you get a good sense of what you are pointing at. So to anyone who has given up on taking photos, due to physical limitations, don't. There's always a way to make it work when you really want to accomplish something. In fact, I have even seen adaptive tripods that can mount to your wheelchair arm rests or the frame. It's a perfect option for those who have restricted mobility such as myself, or those who want to take some seriously steady video without your viewers requiring one of those little bags they give you on an airplane. (you know the ones I mean ;O)
All things considered, I think wobble and all, the essence of the evening was captured.
Sharing What We Love With Who We Love
Do you ever have that feeling when you discover a painter, read a book or hear a musician you adore, that you then, want those you care about to watch, read or listen too! Well, that's how we feel about Justin. So, aside from emailing everyone we knew about the event, turned out my parents and Craig's sister and her husband were able to join us.
Not only did they enjoy Justin and Ash and Bloom, but as you will see in the video, A & B wanted to "go deep" as they said and sing about, "old love,"  celebrating marriages that have been together for a long time. Knowing that my parent's are coming up to their fiftieth wedding anniversary on October 12th, I was thrilled to have them say that. The fellas asked who has been married for five...ten...twenty...thirty and fifty, or more years. With great excitement I looked toward my parents and they had their hands up! You will have to watch the video to find out what happened next. Needless to say, that was surprise number three of the evening.
What a great time!
Thanks Guys!
Craig and I just want to encourage anyone who has the opportunity to listen to or watch Justin and Ash and Bloom, to do so. We hadn't been out in the evening, well, since...can't even remember.
We typically spend the evenings watching a movie or a favourite dvd, relaxing and...oh, how does that song go...."take a load off your fanny...." Yah, we spend it doing that! Seriously, the older that Craig and I get, our ROHO cushions can't comfort our aging, painful backsides. (I know too much information, but those of you in our position, will know what I mean.) This evening was worth any ach or pain that arose, in fact, we were enjoying it all so much, forgot about the pain. What a great pain reliever!

So long Justin and Ash and Bloom, you are in our prayers and we know the rest of your tour will be wonderful. Thanks for sharing your voices and hearts with us. Make sure you look us up if you are ever in our fair city again! God bless you.
Thank You God!
And thank you God for causing us to learn about the concert and for introducing us to Justin, the year the Ontario Tourism promo came out! We didn't need to discover Ontario, You knew we needed to discover Justin Hines!
Lay Your Burdens Down
For those of you who face challenges 24/7, be they invisible or visible, the road may be bumpier at times, heck, even loaded with pot holes and these days, sink holes. And there may be days when you don't have the energy or motivation to even get out of bed. Trust me, I know that feeling. But because God makes Himself known to us, to me, in so many ways, through the Jesus, and even through the lives of individuals like Justin Hines, Joni Eareckson Tada, Nick Vujcic and my husband Craig - my temptation to feel self pity and discouragement is abated. Not saying I never walk down that path of discouragement, but when I am tempted to, or while I have been hiking down it, He reminds me, yet again....
Philippians 4:13 NKJV - I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Matthew 11:28 NKJV - "Come to Me, all [you] who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  "For My yoke [is] easy and My burden is light."

Going With The Flow -Part 1

As we saw in the short film, Butterfly Circus, there actually was a time in history when persons, who had visible differences, compared to the overall population, were exploited astoundingly, used as "attractions," making money for unethical circus owners. A horrible way to spend your life. Even today such things exist, but as far as I know, the differences have beeb chosen by the subjects, such as the lady who is really into snakes, the fire eater, or the dude who's body is fully inked in tattoos, face included. A far different thing it is, to make a living from being stared at because you have chosen to do so. That's none of my business.
Seeing Red
No, I am not in denial. I am fully aware that it's "normal" human behaviour, to have our gazes drawn by anyone or anything, that is not part of our everyday life. As a visual artist, adding a contrasting punch of colour to a composition, causes the eye to automatically look at it. This is why we must be careful where and what we do with the elements and principles of design. Not sure what I mean? Well, look at the image to the right. Pretend this is a completely dull grey neutral landscape or street scene. In paintings, colour can definitely be utilized to evoke specific moods. It all depends on the artist's intent. Personally, I just love colour and couldn't even consider creating anything like this.
Now if there was a red spot on that grey based painting, no matter how small it was, you would see it right away wouldn't you? Just look, even as I type this, that red spot is popping into my peripheral vision, totally unavoidable. That's us! We're contrasts in a sea of grey. No matter how hard we may try to blend into the scenery, we can't. There was a time when I desperately tried to be grey, blending in and yes, actually trying to hide the four wheels "strapped" to my backside!
What Happened!
One day when I was about eleven, one of my caregivers at the institution I lived at, was pushing me in my manual wheelchair. We were planning on just enjoying the day. Suddenly, a total stranger stopped us and began gasping, "What happened?" She moved her face closer to me, as if I was something to inspect. As I sat there, stupefied at her behaviour, my mind raced trying to understand why she was behaving like kooky person. I knew she was referring to my wheelchair, but because I could still walk a little back then, I thought perhaps she knows my Mom and didn't know I use a chair. But, it appeared this was not the case at all. She was just a total stranger,  who had no second thought about stopping us to ask her question.
Not getting a response from either of us, after about the fourth, "what happened?" my indignant caregiver said something like this, "Look it lady, get out of the way, we're trying to go for a walk!" She moved over and we moved on, shaking our heads! That day is one of those imbedded memories that are as clear as yesterday. Being bullied since I was about seven, had become a consistent part of my life. But never had a full grown adult react like that, just because they seen me in my wheelchair! Kids, I had expected it from, but not an adult. No, she wasn't mean, she was sincere. But, when you want to just "be" as everyone else is doing, having a spotlight put on you makes you not only see red, but feel like that red spot on a canvas. Impossible to blend in.
Cammo
In retrospect, it would appear that incident, was a key turning point. Something that I now, ashamedly admit to now, to "camouflage" my obvious, very visible differences, (or shall I say uniquenesses?) became my number one goal. It's not a secret that during these years most of us are self focused as it is. Desperate, I now can admit that Ieven ashamedly admit that by trying to not be around or sometimes even, associate with my peers who were in the same situation as me, in public, I ignorantly believed that others wouldn't view me as different. Yes, I am now ashamed to admit that I did the very thing, I was against. But the young mind is often desperate to survive, especially ones that have already been emotionally pounded with threats, names, taunts and physical intimidation. Thank the Lord, that all things happen for His good purposes and I am able to sit her today and write down these lessons learned the hard way.

Being bullied, doesn't justify negative behaviour in return, but it can help us try to understand the state of mind some are in when they commit awful acts. No, I never went that far, instead I chose to hurt myself instead. How? Well, it was the beginning of grade seven and we all know what happens to twelve year olds. Okay, at least most of them. They struggle with fitting in, finding their place among classmates and peers. Personally, smoking was never a result of peer pressure. Not once did anyone ask me to smoke. Assuming, the more I did what some of the "cool" kids were doing, the more I would be accepted as part of the crowd. Being "normal," if you will.
So there I was, grade seven, far out across our school yard, huddled with a group of fellow students. All of us with a lit tube of smelly tobacco, hanging between our lips. Smoke billowing all around us, as if we were in a huge London fog.
Way Cool!

Then, to affirm my coolness, wouldn't you know it, a fellow classmate/smoker dude, actually came towards me and declared proudly, "Anita's smoking, ever cool!" He wasn't even someone I ever spoke with, but it didn't  matter. The fact that we weren't even friends made it even more meaningful in my delusional young mind. After all,  he made the effort to point out my coolness. Up until that moment, I don't believe I had ever experienced pride. It swelled my head and felt a warm fuzzy well up inside. To me, he didn't see my wheelchair, he saw Anita, being cool! Needless to say, in spite of the disgusting taste, smoking for the sake of being cool (thus blending in) became a way of life for a long time to come. Don't get me wrong, in no way is smoking cool. In fact, most likely, it was the stupidest choice I had made up until that time of life. Notice emphasis on that time of life. But to my twelve year old brain, blending or fitting in, was worth any amount of smelly old smoke.
Actually, I was so afraid of death back then, that I bought lower tar cigarettes and wouldn't hold the smoke in my lungs for more than a split second. Oh right, that was once I finally could inhale the toxins!

No Arms, No Legs, No Worries!

We all know why caterpillars are all bundled up in their cocoon or is it called a chrysalis? Hmm, must do some research. Anyhoo, this morning as my husband and I were waiting for our weekly online church service to begin, I wanted to show Craig a video interview of an incredible man we have shared with readers before, Mr. Nick Vujcic. Last February, God answered one of his prayers about marriage and now he and his lovely wife are expecting! Here is the video interview of the blissful couple.
As we were on You Tube watching the above video I gazed down the list. You know the list of other You Tube videos we might like...the list always leads to watching other videos. Videos, that you never planned to look at to begin with. That is the challenge I face every time I am on the net! The urge to look up a topic or person hits me, so I search, and before I know it, usually something else catches my eye and surprise! Suddenly, I am looking at topics that may not even be close to the original topic! Ever ask yourself this..."What was it I was suppose to be searching for?

Ooops, back to the topic, (see what I mean!). Today however, I believe we were meant to see this video. At least it was still about Nick! The film below, is a short film, about twenty four minutes, called "Butterfly Circus." At first it's heartbreaking, but keep watching! We knew Nick wouldn't be acting in something that had no purpose or point. This film has a powerful message, full of meaning and richness.

Walking, Way Overrated is meant to be a blog that provides resources and inspirational persons and stories to encourage and assist all persons who are differently abled, or for family, friends or anyone who is just interested. That being said, it means we also  share our own experiences as well. As you will see in the video, we may not have been part of any circus that exploits others who may be deemed as "unique." But, all who use various methods to move around, or if we have any visible characteristics that cause others too stare, we can relate to what "Will" is experiencing in this video. If you do hide out because the stares and taunts of others who are just plain ignorant, stop! Been there, done that. More in the next entry.

An Unexpected Christmas, errr, Journey?

Christmas, An Unexpected Journey!

We joined Bilbo Baggins and crew, on his Unexpected Journey. Little did we know, we'd have our own unexpected event just trying to leave the theatre! Watch below to find out what it was!

By the way, we love The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey, just as much the second time. And this time, we both stayed awake, so it was as if we saw it for the first time! (no, we weren't fighting heavy eye lids because the Hobbit was a drag, it's what happens when you are dead tired, sit in a dark room and tilt your wheelchair back like a Lazy Boy.

No Knead Bread Recipe Part 1

Kneading Bread Matters
Don't "they" say that if you are trying to sell a home, bake some bread and it will cause people to want your house??? True or not, who knows? Whatever the answer, doesn't it smell delicious!
Yum, home baked bread. For many it isn't something they have ever considered doing on their own. After all, isn't home made bread difficult and doesn't it require a lot of work? The whole kneading thing is a key part to making a successful loaf of bread. It is the formation of gluten strands, that can only be achieved by kneading. Check out this "How to Knead Dough" video, from All Recipes.
As for me, the only way I would ever be able to make home made bread, was with a bread machine. Unfortunately, it didn't survive long. I suppose it was because I was so thrilled to be able to make home baked bread, pizza dough, bagels, and buns, that I over worked it!
Contrary to what some believe, that a bread machine disqualifies bread from being hand made. We say, yes, we acknowledge that kneading your own bread and all that goes with it, makes it as hand made as can be. However, for those of us who use it because it is the only way to produce the closest substitute to home baked bread, we say, bake on!

Save Money!
Making your own bread, regardless of the method actually makes great budget sense. A decent loaf of Artisan bread at our local market ranges between four to five dollars. To purchase the ingredients, flour, yeast and salt means a fraction of the cost and great tasting bread to boot. (Don't forget the water can come from your tap!)

A Food Wish Comes True!
It was over a year ago, that I stumbled upon one of my favourite recipe food blogs, Food Wishes. Without a bread machine, the possibility of bread making was impossible. Then I saw this ! Never before had I heard of bread that didn't require kneading! Kneadless to say, get it, kneadless! :o) within minutes, I was making bread. All it required was flour, yeast, water and salt and the ability to stir. Oh yes and a total of about twenty one hours. My husband and I tried variations of Chef John's recipe and none of them failed. Over and over, it worked. We eventually came up with our own version, but all the credit goes to Food Wishes.
Aside from me being able to make our own home baked bread and pizza dough, my husband Craig is now the number one bread baker in our home. Even with his poor bent fingers, thanks to arthritis, he too, can easily stir up a loaf of bread. Click here to watch it!

So whether you have limited arm strength or movement or arthritis, the No Knead or Kneadless Bread making method is for you!! It is so rewarding to know you can do something you never thought possible! Wanting to share this awesome opportunity, we have created part one of our Kneadless Bread Making video.
Part two is coming shortly.
