Celebrating Craig: Our Mutual Dear Friend Della Shares...

My name is Della Jordan.

I think my history with Anita and Craig might be a little unique.  I met them separately, at my two different places of employment, during my

37-year working years.

I was a child care worker from 1977-1983 at the then brand-new George Jeffrey Children's Centre Residence. Anita was one of our early and long-term residents. Your parents chose to move you to the city where the school buildings were accessible. Were you around 11 years old? It was a big step for a young girl. You were wise beyond your young age, funny, talented, and kind. You and I were kindred spirits and we had a lot of fun and shenanigans over the years.

In 1983, I changed employment and became a letter carrier at Canada Post. I met Craig the very first week. The mail route sorting case I was

being trained on was across the aisle from Craig's case. Right from the start, Craig's sense of humour was on display. New letter carriers were made welcome for the most part. There was occasional teasing and humour, as we newbies went through growing pains.

I met my husband Dwight at Can Post, a divorced dad with a young son, Cory.

Early in our relationship, I cooked a pizza dinner for Dw and Cory at Dw’s house. Coincidentally, Cory had the flu that evening. Shortly after he went to bed, the pizza decided NOT to stay down. Found out Dw wasn't good with cleaning up sick, so I did it. I told Craig this story at work on Monday and, well, as you can imagine, he

ran with it. It became our ongoing narrative, the tale of the “Wicked Stepson and the Poisoned Pizza”

Craig was kind enough to play Santa several times at our Can Post kids Christmas parties. He was a natural and his kind chatter with the kids was wonderful to watch. The parents would provide and tag gifts for their own children for Santa to give out. We wrapped a jigsaw puzzle for Dw's son Cory. Craig knew who Cory was, and when Cory had his turn, Craig handed him his gift. Knowing Dw and I were watching, Craig handed the flat box to Cory and said, “I think it's a PIZZA.

” Cory was none the wiser, but Dw and I just started laughing.

A letter carrier’s greatest fear is a career-ending injury. We never expect a chronic condition that will take away our ability to do our job. This unexpected change in Craig's journey led him to his beloved Anita and their new life together. God opened the most wonderful door and the rest,

as they say, is history.
